The Guji region southern of Ethiopia is a remote place that has ancient natural coffee forests with unrivalled coffee plant genetic diversity, beautifully forested areas with valleys that stretch far beyond what the eye can see.
Coffee is grown at an elevation of 2100 metres above sea level. To give a comparison of how high that is, New Zealand's Mt Tongariro has an elevation of 1,978m. In many ways, the area is untouched due to the fact that for many years none residents couldn't travel there because of its mineral rich properties such as gold.
From 1974 to 1991, Ethiopia was ruled by a restrictive Marxist dictatorship that required the farms to sell directly to the government at a low price. After the dictatorship fell in 1991 the government began to allow farms to form co-ops and demand fair prices without the use of the middleman, creating more room for growth and opportunity, giving us what we know so well in the world of speciality coffee, that being Ethiopian coffee.
