The Guji region in southern Ethiopia is one of the world’s most remarkable coffee-growing landscapes a remote area home to ancient natural coffee forests, extraordinary genetic diversity, and breathtaking valleys that stretch far beyond the horizon.
Coffee here is grown at elevations of up to 2,100 metres above sea level. To put that into perspective, that’s even higher than Mount Tongariro, which stands at 1,978 metres.
Between 1974 and 1991, Ethiopia was governed by a restrictive Marxist regime that required coffee farmers to sell directly to the government at heavily controlled prices, limiting opportunity for growth.
Following the fall of the regime in 1991, farmers were given greater freedom to form cooperatives and sell their coffee at fairer market prices. This shift helped unlock the potential of Ethiopian coffee and played a major role in shaping what the world now recognises as specialty Ethiopian coffee.
